Key Takeaways

✓ "Chelated" means the magnesium is bound to an organic molecule, most often an amino acid such as glycine.

✓ Magnesium glycinate, also called bisglycinate, is the best-known chelated form. Citrate and malate are organic salts; oxide and chloride are inorganic.

✓ On any label, compare elemental magnesium per serving and check whether the chelate is blended with magnesium oxide.

What "chelated" means

Chelate comes from the Greek word for claw. In a chelated mineral, an organic molecule holds the mineral at two or more points, forming a stable ring. With magnesium, that molecule is usually an amino acid. Two glycine molecules holding one magnesium gives magnesium bisglycinate, which most labels shorten to magnesium glycinate.

The word describes how the magnesium is packaged. It does not by itself tell you the amount of magnesium, the quality of the product, or what it will do for you.

The main forms of magnesium

Group Examples Worth knowing
Amino acid chelates Glycinate (bisglycinate), taurate, "amino acid chelate" Magnesium bound to an amino acid. "Amino acid chelate" without a named amino acid tells you less than a named form.
Organic salts Citrate, malate, lactate, gluconate Magnesium paired with an organic acid. They dissolve well in liquid.
Inorganic salts Oxide, chloride, sulfate, carbonate Oxide has the most magnesium by weight, but less of it is absorbed.

Does chelated magnesium absorb better?

A systematic review of 14 comparison studies found that organic forms of magnesium appear to be more bioavailable than inorganic forms, that the percentage absorbed falls as the dose rises, and that all forms can maintain normal levels in healthy people (PMID: 34111673). The NIH makes a similar point: forms that dissolve well in liquid are absorbed more completely than less soluble forms such as oxide (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).

For the glycine chelate specifically, a controlled trial in 12 patients with part of the small intestine removed found absorption similar to oxide overall, substantially greater in the patients who absorbed oxide worst, and better tolerance with the chelate (PMID: 7815675). That is a small study in a specific group, so it should not be stretched too far.

Is chelated magnesium easier on the stomach?

High amounts of supplemental magnesium can cause loose stools. The NIH notes that the forms most often reported to do this are carbonate, chloride, gluconate and oxide. Many people choose a glycine chelate for that reason, though tolerance varies from person to person and the total amount matters more than the form.

How to read a chelated magnesium label

  • Find the elemental magnesium. Chelates are bulky. A label may show a large compound weight and a much smaller magnesium amount. The magnesium amount is the one to compare.
  • Look for the word "buffered" or for magnesium oxide in the ingredients. Either one means the chelate is blended with oxide.
  • Prefer a named form. "Magnesium glycinate" or "bisglycinate" says more than "magnesium amino acid chelate".
  • Check the serving size. The stated amount may refer to two, three or four capsules.
  • Stay under the limit. The NIH upper limit for magnesium from supplements is 350 mg a day for adults.

Where Veluna fits

Veluna Magnesium Glycinate is a chelated magnesium glycinate with 275 mg of elemental magnesium per three-capsule serving, from 2,500 mg of magnesium glycinate. It is third-party tested. Magnesium supports normal muscle and nervous-system function. See it with related bundles on the magnesium for sleep page.

Common questions

Is chelated magnesium the same as magnesium glycinate?

Magnesium glycinate is one kind of chelated magnesium, and the most common. Not every chelated product uses glycine. See magnesium glycinate vs. bisglycinate for the naming.

Is magnesium citrate chelated?

Strictly, citrate is an organic salt rather than an amino acid chelate, although some labels use the word loosely. Both belong to the organic group.

When should I take it?

Follow the label. Many people take magnesium in the evening as part of a consistent wind-down. If you take prescription medication, ask a pharmacist about spacing, because magnesium can interfere with how some medicines are absorbed.
