How to read these numbers
- What is counted. The share of adults who report usually sleeping less than seven hours in a 24-hour period, the CDC's definition of short sleep. Seven hours is the minimum the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend for adults.
- Where it comes from. The CDC's PLACES project (2025 release), which models local estimates from the national Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey (2022 data). These are model-based estimates, not a count of every resident. This is survey data, not a trial, so there is no placebo or control group.
- Age-adjusted. Cities are compared using age-adjusted figures, so a city with more retirees or more students is compared fairly with one that has fewer.
- Close ranks are close. Each city has a 95% range. Cities a few places apart often have overlapping ranges, so read the rank as a neighbourhood, not a precise position.
- States. Each state figure is the population-weighted average of the CDC's age-adjusted county estimates for that state, calculated by Veluna.
If your city is near the top
Sleep habits are personal, but a few planning tools help: our sleep debt calculator shows how far behind you are this week, the caffeine cut-off calculator gives you a time for your last coffee, and Sleep is a sequence, not a switch explains the evening routine Veluna is built around. Talk to a clinician about ongoing sleep problems.
